Maryellen Williams-Candek received her doctoral degree in Instruction and Learning from the University of Pittsburgh following a career in engineering. She has taught all subjects in an elementary setting as well as middle-school mathematics. She has National Board Certification in middle-level education. At the University of Pittsburgh, she teaches math and science methods courses to graduate-level students in addition to her work with the Institute for Learning. There, she designs mathematics professional development workshops and teaching and learning tools as well as facilitates district professional development workshops. Her work has been presented at the national research meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and published in practitioner-oriented journals.
