1:00 - 3:30 PM Concurrent Content Sessions:

Differentiation and Intervention in Mathematics Classrooms: Why are both needed to close the achievement gap?

In this session, participants will grapple with the difference between differentiation and intervention. Via a middle school case, instructional practices associated with differentiation will be identified and participants will discuss reasons why all students have the right to differentiated instruction. Within the same middle school case, however, some students will be identified as needing even more support, referred to commonly as an “intervention.” Participants will consider the difference between an intervention and a differentiation and determine if all interventions are created equal.

Connecting the Core: Literacy and Content Learning

The building of coherent content knowledge drives access to literacy; in addition, robust literacy instruction with complex informational texts provides access to deeper content knowledge, which facilitates deeper comprehension. Apprenticing students in the disciplines builds literacy skills and advances content knowledge, thus preparing students for the 21st century workplace and colleges. Join us as we consider the following questions related to literacy:

  • How do we address shifting populations and meeting the needs of all of our students (increasing equity)?
  • How do we address CCSS and new standards (building disciplinary literacy)?
  • How do we make this work sustainable?
